First responders were called to the 400 block of Mahogany Walk in Newtown Grant around 4:30 a.m., police said.
Arriving officers spotted heavy smoke and fire, the release says. They forced their way inside but were driven back out by the flames, according to authorities.
After firefighters extinguished the blaze, an elderly woman was found dead in a second-floor bedroom, police said. Her name and age were withheld pending notification of her loved ones.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, police added.
